Who is Vivek Ramaswamy ?

Vivek Ramaswamy’s full name is Vivek Ganapathy Ramaswamy and is 38 year old Indian-American individual. He was born on August 9, 1985 in Cincinnati, Ohio, His family are Tamil-speaking Brahmins from Kerala, India which later migrated to USA.

Vivek Ramaswamy is currently an American entrepreneur and a political personality. He established Roivant Sciences, a pharmaceutical company, back in  early 2014. In February 2023, Vivek Ramaswamy officially announced his candidacy for the Republican Party’s nomination in the upcoming 2024 United States presidential election.

Ramaswamy initiated his campaign by asserting that the United States is currently grappling with a national identity crisis, which he attributes to what he terms as ‘new secular belief systems’. Vivek Ramaswamy has also raised his voice in criticism of environmental, social, and corporate governance initiatives (ESG). As of August 2023, Forbes official’s had  estimated Ramaswamy’s net worth to be in excess of $950 million, primarily accumulated from his ventures in biotechnology and finance.

 

Education background

Vivek Ramaswamy’s educational journey began in a public schools, where he completed his studies up to the eighth grade. Following this, he enrolled at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, a Catholic institution affiliated with the Jesuit order. 

He had excellent academic  records  and graduated as the valedictorian of his class in the year 2003.

 

In the year 2007, Ramaswamy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with the highest honors in biology from the Harvard University. He was also recognized as a distinguished member of Phi Beta Kappa. During his time at Harvard, he became known for his confident and outspoken libertarian views and great communicational skills. He had actively participated in the events such as Harvard Political Union and eventually became its president. In an interview with The Harvard Crimson, he described himself as one who always enjoyed engaging in debates and sharing his views and opinions on the topics.

Vivek Ramaswamy also had his interests in creative initiatives as as he used to peform covers of Eminem’s songs and also created rap music with libertarian themes under the stage name of “Da Vek”

He also has professional experience through internships which he had in hedge fund  named Amaranth Advisors and also worked in the top Investment bank i.e Goldman Sachs. Ramaswamy’s senior thesis had a focus on ethical topics such as creation of human-animal chimeras and also earned various medals for his thoughts and opinions.

In 2011, Ramaswamy received a post-graduate fellowship from the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans, which he used to pursue his legal education at Yale Law School. By the time he entered Yale, he had already amassed significant wealth from his involvement in the finance, pharmaceutical, and biotech sectors.

In 2013 Ramaswamy successfully earned his Juris Doctor degree. Also, during his law school years, he was also a member of the campus Jewish intellectual discussion society known as Shabtai

 

In a 2023 interview, Ramaswamy had disclosed that he had a total net worth of approximately $15 million even before completing his law degree. During his time at Yale, he coined a great friendship and relationship with future U.S. Senator J. D. Vance.

Professional Career growth

In 2007, Ramaswamy established Campus Venture Network which he did with the help of Travis May. Campus Venture Network’s objective was to create a private social networking platform for university students. In the later stage, the company was  acquired by the Non-Profit organization named  Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in the year 2009.

From 2007 to 2014, Ramaswamy has his professional experience in QVT Financials, where he held the position of partner and co-managed the firm’s biotechnology portfolio. During his tenure in QVT Financials, Ramaswamy had worked with companies like Palatin Technologies, Concert Pharmaceuticals, Pharmasset, and Retrophin, which was led by Martin Shkreli.

In 2014, Vivek Ramaswamy founded Roivant Sciences, a biotechnology firm in Bermuda. The name “Roivant” cleverly incorporated “ROI,” symbolizing Return On Investment. Roivant’s strategy involved acquiring pharmaceutical patents and bringing drugs to market. They created various subsidiaries for different markets.

In 2015, Ramaswamy created  Roivant subsidiary Axovant Sciences. This venture led to Ramaswamy gaining recognition, with Forbes featuring him on their cover. Axovant Sciences, aimed to develop an Alzheimer’s drug, but after an IPO, the drug trails failed, causing a steep stock price drop and wealth degradation.

In 2017, Ramaswamy secured a substantial investment of $1.1 billion in Roivant by SoftBank .

In 2019, Roivant sold stakes in five subsidiaries, with Ramaswamy making a total $175 million in profits.

In 2021, He stepped down as CEO of Roivant and company went public in 2021.

In 2023, he left his chairman position to focus on his political career and start his presidential campaign journey.

 

Political Career

Vivek Ramaswamy had disclosed that he voted for the Libertarian Party in 2004 but didn’t participate in presidential elections from 2008 to 2016. He described himself as apolitical and do not explicitly support any political party during this period.

In 2020, He supported Donald Trump in 2020 elections.

In 2016, Ramaswamy has made political contributions to both the partis of Democrats and Republicans.

In 2021, Ramaswamy registered to vote in Franklin County, Ohio, as “unaffiliated”, but described himself as a Republican

In 2022, Ramaswamy considered running for the U.S. Senate in Ohio .

 

In 2023, He officially declared that he will file for his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the 2024 U.S. presidential elections.
